Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Review

Back in the 90's, there were many television shows that were very popular, especially with children.  One of those shows was Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers!  It was all about five teenagers, later six, with attitude protecting and saving our world from the evil witch Rita Repulsa.  With the help of Zordon and Alpha 5, they receive power morphers, representing certain dinosaurs, and transformed into the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.  With the popularity of the show, there was bound to be video games.  There were games on the Super Nintendo, SEGA CD, Game Boy, SEGA Game Gear, and on the SEGA Genesis.  Today, we'll be reviewing Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers for the SEGA Genesis/ Mega Drive!!!

Game Synopsis

Rita Repulsa is ready to take over the world and the only thing stopping her is the Power Rangers.  Her plan is to send out monsters and an evil ranger in this tournament style game to defeat the rangers once and for all.  Are you up to the challenge?  Take control of the rangers and save the world!

Gameplay/ Game Mechanics

Just as the game synopsis states, this is a fighting game.  When you first play the game, you'll probably think about Street Fighter 2 in so many ways.  You go through the game as the rangers and fight five monsters/ evil ranger, so this game is relatively short.  There are two rounds during each fight; one ranger fight with the monster, then one Megazord battle with the monster now tall.  This is where I think the game differs from Street Fighter 2. Some special moves and using some of the power weapons can be difficult to use since the controls  can be somewhat stiff.  There are only two buttons that are used in this game.  The A button is the standard attack button, which is pretty weak but it's much faster.  The B button is your fierce attack; strong but much slower

Difficulty

Apparently being evil makes you stonger
Just as in any fighting game, the difficulty increases as you go through each stage.  The game does have some difficulty spikes as you go further in the game.  For example, the evil green ranger will come at you from the start, and he is faster and stronger than you.  Also, the final opponent will stop at nothing to kill you, which makes him very difficult to defeat.  Luckily, you can change the difficulty setting in the options menu.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in this game are great for its time, but there are some exceptions.  For instance, all the rangers have the same sprite, and it's noticeable.  The cut scenes are superb and they are great breaks from the gameplay.  They can be a little bit repetitive, but you can gladly skip them.  Sound wise, it's amazing.  Even though some of the voices are distorted, the music is great!!!  For me, the ranger stage music makes me feel like getting into a fight (just kidding).

Conclusion

The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers have had a great time in the lives of children, and this game is just the icing on the cake.  If you're a die hard fan of the series, then this game should be in your collection.  If you just want to play a fighting game based off of multicolored superheroes, this game is something you want.  With that said, we give Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers for the SEGA Genesis/ Mega Drive a 7.5 out of 10.  It's a great game, just be ready to rage quit.
