Sonic Generations Review

Sonic Generations is a new game for everyone who likes to play as the little blue blur for their Xbox 360. It is a single player game that allows gamers to play as classic Sonic (Sonic from the past) or Modern Sonic (Sonic today). The objective is to race through different levels that have appeared in previous sonic games. From the Green Hill Zone in the first Sonic the Hedgehog game to the last addition of Planet Wisp in Sonic Colors. In this game, every Sonic fan can relive the memories they’ve had of Sonic in the past as they battle old foes and dash through every stage. Although The Blue Blur has been struggling from his disappointments in the franchise, will this game get him back on his feet? Let’s find out in this review of Sonic Generations.
STORYLINE
The intro to the story shows the whole sonic crew throwing a surprise birthday party for Sonic. The crew consists of Tails, Knuckles, Amy and a host of other recognizable characters. Suddenly, a mysterious figure known as the time eater kidnaps all of Sonic’s friends and Sonic is transported into an empty area that is a part of time of space. There, he finds his classic self as well as his sidekick Tails and classic Tails whom is able to talk for the first time. Classic Sonic does not have a voice and he can only use gestures to communicate what he’s thinking. Together, they race through different levels from the past in order to restore time and space. As they continue in their adventure, they began to unlock many questions along the way. Who is this Time Eater? Where are all of Sonic’s Friends and who is behind this mysterious phenomenon? *COUGH Eggmans COUGH*
GAMEPLAY
Throughout the game, you can switch back and forth from classic to modern Sonic by pressing the Y button. As classic sonic, you can use a spin dash and spin while taping or holding the X button. Yep. That is all Classic Sonic can do; however, you can activate a variety of moves as Modern Sonic. You can use a homing attack by pressing the A button,  light speed dash by pressing the Y button, wall jump by also pressing the A button, and an extra boost by pressing the X button. Outside the levels, there is a shop owned by omacho that lets you update skills that Sonic can activate. One of those skills gives both Sonics the ability to slow down time and their super forms are also a skill to be unlocked in the game. The levels in the game can be classic or modern depending on which Sonic is being used. As both Sonics, you go through familiar obstacles as they run up and down or grind their way to the finish line. They also get to battle robots and other creatures that Sonic has ran into throughout the franchise. For Sonic fans who owned previous sonic games, this is a piece of cake. Although there are some changes in the levels that would make players go “hmmm, I didn’t see that coming”! The objective to get to point A to point B is still the same and you will always get a rank after completing the level. After the level is complete, a sonic character is unlocked not as a playable character, but acts as a guide to tell sonic information including where to find the red rings. The levels also consist of various challenges that you need to complete in order to move forward. They include racing against other characters or calling on them for support in order to get over or through an obstacle. Of course like any other sonic games, there are rival and boss battles. The rivals Sonic has to face are other famous Hedgehogs and robots in the Sonic franchise. They are Metal Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Silver the Hedgehog. In boss battles, Sonic has to face previous villains such as Perfect Chaos. Note; Sonic does not have all the chaos emeralds yet, so you have to beat perfect chaos without his super form. Good luck with that!
LENGTH
For Sonic fans, it shouldn’t take that long to complete the whole game. If there is a lot of free time, they can beat the game in about a day or so. Basically, the objective of getting to point A to point B has always been the main focus in every Sonic game. As I’ve said before, the stages are from past Sonic games, so Sonic fans will not have that much trouble finding the goal ring in less than 5 minutes.
GRAPHICS/SOUND
The graphics are spectacular from 2-D to 3-D in every sonic stage. The classic stages got the most improvements as players can see how technology has changed in order to make each stage look more interesting. The design of Classic Sonic and Tails has improved as well because these figures are shown as 3-D characters much like their modern counterparts and not just 2-D. There is also a great selection of music in the game. What makes this fantastic is that the game lets you play any song you want during a sonic stage or boss battle. For example, anyone can replace the green hill zone theme with Open Your Heart or Live and Learn. The game lets you replay scenes that have been unlocked from the game and players can feel free to play the levels and challenges over and over again.
OVERALL
This is a very comfortable game for sonic fans to enjoy playing as their favorite character. Overall, this game deserves a 9 out of 10. Its excellent graphics, controls, and sounds have made this the best sonic game up to date. It gives sonic fans hope that sonic has a bright future ahead of him despite disappointments from other sonic games. HEY SONIC! Enjoy your future. It’s gonna be GREAT!
