Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Review

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
The game in general: The Metroid series all started back in the NES days when Metroid was released. It wasn’t exactly a best seller, but it wasn’t considered a bad game. In 2002, Metroid Prime was released for the GameCube and got a tremendous amount of praise. It was the first FPS Metroid game, and probably the best one. Prime’s graphics were so good at the time that it challenged the graphics of the Xbox, which is saying a lot. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was released as a sequel to this game, and Prime 3 was released as the sequel to that in 2007. Metroid Prime 3 is said to be one of the worst Prime games, but many people could easily argue against that. Personally, I love it. Its unique Wii controls, it’s beautiful graphics, and it’s outstanding game play prove it to be (at least in my opinion) one of the best Prime games.

Controls: Nintendo and Retro Studios did a fantastic job of incorporating some very unique controls into this game. One of my personal favorites is how you use your Grapple Beam. You cast the Nunchuk forward after you lock on to a Grappling hook and swing across. You can also use to Grapple Beam to rip off enemy shields by locking in to an enemy with a shield, casting the Nunchuk forward, and then pulling it back towards you; it’s as if you’re part of the battle, and I love that. Other controls that I love are how you point your Wii remote at what you want to shoot. Nintendo took advantage of the Wii’s motion technology and used it to create a smooth, and ultimately perfect targeting system. In my opinion, they are the best FPS controls you could ever wish for. The controls are a big part of this game, and one of the reasons I like it so much.
Graphics: Like Metroid Prime, the graphics are absolutely brilliant. Nintendo did a great job with them, and put lots of detail into each and every room, corridor, and hallway. I sometimes think maybe they put a little too much detail into graphics because the larger rooms take a long time to load, and the Wii takes time to process the area you are going into next, so this sometimes is frustrating, especially when you’re short on time. But besides that, the graphics are stunning and very, very detailed.
Story and Gameplay: The gameplay, like all the other categories, is also fantastic. The graphics along with the controls make for a fantastic gameplay experience. As usual, Ridley makes numerous appearances in one form, and one more in another form. The first battle with him is pretty cool, but sort of easy, and same with the second one. The story picks up right where Metroid Prime 2: Echoes leaves off. Samus is in her ship returning to the G.F.S Olympus, a mother ship in the galactic cluster they’re located in. Samus docks her ship and then meets up with the three other hunters, Ghor, Rundas, and Gandraya, to be introduced to the ship’s aurora unit. An aurora unit is an organic super computer, and the Galactic Federation core network is comprised of these units. Samus and the three other hunters learn that the space pirates hacked into the network and planted a virus. The G.F had to shut down the network in order to stop the virus from spreading. The hunters’ jobs are to administer a vaccine that the G.F.S Olympus’ unit received in order to purge the virus. After the hunters receive the vaccine, pirates attack the Olympus and Samus encounters a nasty beast on her way. I have to say, the most epic part of the game was the Pirate Homeworld, the space pirate stronghold planet. There are countless epic space pirate battles, and the last hunter is kind of hard to battle, and you’ll know what I mean once you reach that point. In the game, you can enter a mode called Hyper Mode. Your attacks are about twice as powerful in that form, but the only catch is that you lose a full energy tank, which brings me to my next topic: expansions. You can get up to 250 missiles and 14 energy tanks. Collecting them all is big challenge, but you don’t necessarily need them all to beat the final boss. I managed to beat the final boss with 11 energy tanks and 205 missiles. You barely use missiles on enemies at all, so you could probably beat the final boss with just 100 missiles. This game is 100% intense and fun to play.
Conclusion: This is an amazing game that will keep you busy for hours on end. It is an amazing addition to the Prime trilogy, and I’m hopefully waiting for a sequel to this. This is a great buy, and any fan of the Metroid series should own this game. The reasons why it’s so great can be described in 3 words: graphics, gameplay, controls. Three reasons you should get this game. It gets a 10/10 from me.
