Skate 3 Review

If you are into skateboarding, then you will enjoy playing Skate 3 on your Xbox 360 or Play Station 3. This game is rated T for teenagers. Although skate 3 is obviously a skateboarding video game, it is not at all connected to the Tony Hawk franchise. This interesting game takes skating to a whole different level as you skate you’re way through the college or grind you’re way through the city streets. The controls are way different as the game makes skating more real than in the Tony Hawk series. There are some features within the game that lets you create your own skate park and you can form your own team of average skate boarders. It allows up to 6 people to play and it allows you to save information. Will this game make you want to play for hours and hours? Here is the review for Skate 3.

     Storyline

The whole basis of Skate 3 is not really based on a particular storyline. It just has specific challenges and goals you have to accomplish in order to increase your success and popularity. You will run into different skaters, but they will only give you the tasks that you have to complete or they might be looking for a challenge. The introduction of the game explains the whole part of your situation as it starts out with a video of real skateboarders like Eric Kouston, Terry Kennedy and a bunch of other skaters that you may or may not be familiar with. You begin as a typical skater trying to do the most epic stunt off the rooftop of a stadium on live television. During the middle of your stunt your feet leave the board and you end up falling on the grass from mid-air. You’re camera guy wakes you up from your unconsciousness and he informs you that you can start your own game company with other skaters. After the information, you begin your journey as you find different challenges that can help you with your goal.

Length

The length of the game depends on how much you spend your free time skating around your environment because the challenges are scattered everywhere around the area. Some are easy to conquer and some can make you frustrated when you play it over and over again. If you want to find any specific challenge, you can use the map to help you look for any goals that you have not completed. Each challenge is different. Some of the challenges involve racing against other normal skaters or competing during certain skating events. For example, there is one type of challenge called own the spot. If you want the claim that spot as your territory, you have to beat a previous score that the game has installed for that area. If you think that you can beat your own score, than feel free to try that challenge again. As you complete certain challenges, you can create a team of pro-skaters that can help you throughout the game. You can call that skater at any certain time whenever you need a break from playing as yourself.

How to play

There are many tricks that a skateboarder can do in real life as well as here in this video game. You can do a range of certain tricks like the Ollie, the Kick flip, the Heel flip, etc… If you want to learn how to do a certain trick, there is a skake school in the option tab that gives you information on how to activate any trick on your control stick. Some tricks like the Ollie are easy to do since you can only flick the right control stick up; however, there are a lot of complicated tricks that involves you performing a certain combination on your control panel. It’s not that complicated because most of the flat ground tricks are activated with your right control stick. The left control stick makes your skater do a 180 or a 360 turn. There are other tricks where you have to press a certain button to perform it but you’ll be able to learn about it in the skate school. Want to walk around or go up and down the stairs? You can press the Y button to have your skateboarder take his or her feet off the board. This installation in the game makes life a whole lot easier when you want save time and not have to skate around a certain building or object to restart on your stunt.  You can also be able to replay and save video of your skating moves and you can take pictures as well and send them to EA Nations.

Graphics/Sound

The graphics of this game are excellent. It gives you a good view of the environment you are in. The never ending daylight gives you a good view wherever you are skating. There are a few dark places in the game but you will always get a chance to wipe out on a skateboard. The sound effects of the game do sound like real life skating. You will defiantly hear what it sounds like when you get hit by a car or when grind on certain objects. The soundtrack of this game is also fantastic. You can listen to a collection of rock or hip hop genres that they installed in the game. Songs like Put On by Young Jeezy and Kanye West and Summertime Clothes by Animal Collection are available to listen to.

Overall

This game is an excellent game. It lets you feel free to create your own skate world, it lets you perform a good number of tricks, it lets you compete with friends on and offline with EA nations and you can skate for as long as you like. Because it doesn’t have a storyline to it, you can expect the unexpected and you don’t have to repeat what you already know. My overall rating for this game would be 9 out of 10.
